Adding Google Apps Email To The Palm Pre

November 18, 2009

Many people now use Google Apps to host their email servers and handle all their email requirements, we do the same at Simplypalmpre. It started off as a let us see how it goes experiment, that has provided a great user experience.

But how do you get it onto your Palm Pre is the question, and the answer to our surprise is a lot easier then you would think.

It is a simple case of adding a new Gmail account to the Pre:

1) Select the Contacts app

2) Tap “Contacts” (top left), choose Prefernces and Accounts

3) Scroll to the bottom and choose the “Add An Account” option

4) Select Google

5) Type in your email address ie me@mydomain.com, and password and Tap Sign In

The Job is done…..

To know the actual settings used for the Google apps email see below:

Mail Type: Imap

Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
Username: Your full email address ie me@mydomain.com
Password: your password
Port: 993
Encryption: SSL

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
User Authentication: On
Username: same as above
Password: same as above
Port: 465
Encryption: SSL

The Palm Pre adds the new account as Gmail which means it can be hard to distinguish which is your Gmail account (if you have one like me) and which is your Google Apps account. There is a very simple solution for this, rename your email account.

To do this:

1) Select the Email app

2) Select the account you wish to re-name.

3) Change Account Name to anything you wish it to be
