I always thought Palm would have a lawsuit or two to deal with when it launched the Palm Pre, I also always thought that Apple would be the other party and multi-touch on webOS the case being brought to court. However it doesn’t really matter what I think as Palm has indeed has two lawsuits filed against it but not from Apple. The two companies in question are Artifex Software Inc and Jason Standiford who isn’t a company but a user of the Palm Pre.
The two lawsuits are for entirely different reasons the first filed by Artifex Software Inc is in reference to the PDF software called muPDF which webOS uses to render PDF documents , there is some confusion as to the type of licence Palm needed to use this software, without going into too much more detail you can read a better explanation here.
The second lawsuit is filed by Jason Standiford et al. all of whom have suffered at the hands of Palm’s disappearing Palm Profile trick. Jason Standiford is not the only Palm user to have lost data as we reported on this site a lot of people have suffered some kind of loss, this can be put down to older versions of webOS or just problems with the Palm cloud. However we don’t all go around suing Palm , although it is interesting to see if Jason was to win compensation how many other people would see fit to follow suit and file their own lawsuits.

The screenshot above is apparently from the new Palm Ares development tool , a Visual Studio type system that will allow easy and rapid mobile apps development. As previously reported there was no actual date of release for this tool, however it seems to be coming closer as Palm have announced that a select few will get their hands on it first.
PalmPreachers a Hebrew site about the shows a login screenshot from the Ares tool, the post is in Hebrew but from what google translate told me a few people are being allowed to use the system. It also states it is not allowed to show anymore because it has been asked not to, any correction to the Hebrew translation please let us know.
If anyone wants to get invloved and help Palm test the tool then all you have to do is follow the instructions here you will eventually get some kind of chance to take a look. The only way to solve the problem of too few apps is to develop more of them so here is a real chance to push webOS apps forward.

All Palm Pre fans know the lack of apps around at the moment there are some 400 odd in the app catalog. Gizmodo recently found that there were 3 paid apps to make your Palm Pre fart which is quite sad that despite their being a lack of apps out there people cant come up with original ideas of how to use the Palm Pre.
My real frustation is the fact that as a UK user all I get is 93 apps and no access to paid apps , also there has been no update to the app catalog for days now. Franky speaking i’m getting a little bored of this and I don’t need an app for everything I’d just like to have aceess to some of the damned things Please.
So I am almost seeing why people would want an iPhone just for all the apps because I cannot use my phone for half the things I’d like to at the moment.

Is this a Palm Pre it really looks like one but it isn’t, in fact it is just a simple Martha Stewart ink pad the costing $5.99. There are some limitations you can’t make phone calls, send text messages, check your email or surf the Internet. You can however use the ink to finger print the person who stole your Palm Pre and replaced it with this look-a-like.

There have been rumblings ever since the release of WebOS 1.3.1 that it has crippled the app catalog for European Palm Pre users, I didn’t really pay too much notice to this until today. It is only when you really want something and you cannot get it that you really start to feel the pain. I saw this really cool app, it wasn’t going to order me pizza , help me split the tip or do my online banking but I wanted it. Made Simple for webOS looked great having seen it on precentral, ahhh I thought I bet I can’t get this app. I did a search anyway and the image above is the result , to say I am not happy would be the understatement of the century. A little over the top I know but it makes for good reading.
The Palm Pre should allow all apps to appear in UK catalogues , it is up to the end user to decide if they do or don’t want it . If they are not going to do this, then they should make it clear when they sell the device that there will be a limited number of apps for UK users. I actually love looking at new apps, even if I have to pay for them and even if they are not relevant to the UK. I love the fact you can look at how people are utilising the Pre, you can even get some cool ideas for new apps. In short Palm should allow all apps available to all people , maybe the app catalog needs a filter by region for those who prefer it. What we don’t need is Palm dictating what is available to me just because of where I live.

The one thing iPhone users always turn their noses up at Palm Pre owners about is the lack of games on the Pre, not only that but the lack of support of the current SDK for good games development. So when the video above showed it’s head on the web , there were many that said straight away that it’s a hoax others said maybe it wasn’t as it came from a reliable source. You can read the full story here, personally I think it could be some kind of elaborate leak from Palm to show the possible power of upcoming versions of the SDK. On the other hand it could just be a hoax, who knows I am hoping that it isn’t a hoax.

A week or so after the US got their update to WebOS 1.3.1 and a week before expected the update to bring UK Palm Pre users to parity with the US has finally arrived. There are a host of added features with this update, some are much needed such as text forward and yahoo synergy syncing others just increase the usability of the Palm Pre. The UK download is 123MB (seen from the screen shot above) for this update where as teh US one shown on precentral was a little smaler at 126MB, they are of course (or were) a few versions of WebOS ahead of the UK.

A special version of the very popular tech news aggregator Techmeme is now live, aimed at smartphones like the Palm Pre, iPhone and Droid. It has a host of features that make mobile browsing a whole of a lot easier. Because the site has been created from the ground up for mobile browsers it offers greatly enhanced usability, it is a lot easier to read then the normal site and also has individual pages for each item , something that the techmeme.com site doesn’t have yet.

With the release of WebOS 1.3.1 Palm have officially accepted defeat in the battle to con iTunes into believing the Palm Pre was an Apple music device. 1.3.1 didn’t offer another work around the last Apple update which stopped the Palm Pre connecting to iTunes, this sends the signal that Palm are not going to keep playing the cat and mouse game.
All this aside Palm Pre users still need some way of syncing their devices to iTunes, help is at hand through the third party software MediaMonkey, the photo , music and general file organiser. Release 3.2 adds support for the Palm Pre which means users can take advantage of MediaMonkey’s ability to connect to iTunes giving at least some kind of solution to the stalemate between Palm and Apple.

The Palm Pre was the 6th best selling smartphone in the US for the third quarter of 2009, there were no surprises right at the top with the iPhone in 1st position. The rest of the places were dominated by RIM’s Blackberry.
The fact that the Palm Pre has come in 6th puts it in a good position coming up to the holiday season, what impact the Pixi will have on the figures remains to be seen. There is also the Motorola Droid that will come into the mix, so the Pre is going to have a lot of work to do to move up the charts. The fact it is a better phone than all the rest counts for nothing when it comes to these kind of charts, it is numbers of units sold.
