The way you judge any piece of kit you have is it’s usefulness when you really need it, and you never really need your phone more then when you are hundreds of miles from home. So on my trip to the big smoke (London) the Palm Pre was meant to be entertainment on the way down , but also a way to communicate with home when there. There is no doubting the fact that smartphones have brought information to our finger tips this was proven on the journey to London. Wikipedia is a great source when you want to find out information such has how Caviar is harvested , and the Palm Pre is a great phone to give you access to that information quickly.
The full Qwerty keyboard really comes in handy when searching the Internet for information, and the fact you can start typing and the Pre will automatically be ready for you to choose the search site you wish to use (Google , Wikipedia etc). However the basic function of a phone is to make calls, and this is not something that has impressed me with the Pre in the past few weeks and it really failed on this journey. Every time a call was made a “dropped call” message would appear, initially I thought that being London the O2 network must be jammed and decided to try later. Hours later and the same problem, all other phones worked fine that people were using.
After all the trying I decided the best course of action maybe to re-start the phone again, so this is what I did amd hey presto! it all worked fine and the world was a better place. This is not the end of the story though, the lights on the keyboard stopped working a few hours later. This meant that calls in the dark were impossible as you could not see any keys. The thing that solved this little issue was a “Partial Erase” of the phone meaning all local date is lost. However you can restore everything from Palm Profile or can you?
