The Palm Pre was the 6th best selling smartphone in the US for the third quarter of 2009, there were no surprises right at the top with the iPhone in 1st position. The rest of the places were dominated by RIM’s Blackberry.

The fact that the Palm Pre has come in 6th puts it in a good position coming up to the holiday season, what impact the Pixi will have on the figures remains to be seen. There is also the Motorola Droid that will come into the mix, so the Pre is going to have a lot of work to do to move up the charts.  The fact it is a better phone than all the rest counts for nothing when it comes to these kind of charts, it is numbers of units sold.

The recent lowering of the price on the Palm Pre may help it sell more units and maybe fill a few Christmas stockings, things in the UK are a lot less clearer as there have been no real sales figures released as of yet.

The full breakdown of the top 10 is:

1. iPhone 3GS
2. BlackBerry Curve (8310, 8320, 8350i, 8520, 8900, and 8830)
3. BlackBerry Pearl (8110, 8120, and 8130)
4. iPhone 3G
5. BlackBerry Storm (9530)
6. Palm Pre
7. BlackBerry Bold (9000)
8. T-Mobile MyTouch 3G (HTC)
9. BlackBerry Pearl Flip (8220 and the 8230)
10. BlackBerry 8830
