Is this a Palm Pre it really looks like one but it isn’t, in fact it is just a simple Martha Stewart ink pad the costing $5.99. There are some limitations you can’t make phone calls, send text messages, check your email or surf the Internet. You can however use the ink to finger print the person who stole your Palm Pre and replaced it with this look-a-like.

Everyone knows that the Palm Pre in grand appreciation of the Blackberry, adds a signature to all emails sent from the phone with the text “Sent from my Palm Pre”. As opposed to the “Sent from a Blackberry” kind of thing. However the Palm Pixi now wants to get in on the act, and it would be safe to presume that the signature it would choose would be “Sent from my Palm Pixi”, however presumption is a dangerous business.
The photo above shows a Palm Pixi thinking it is a Palm Pre and adding a signature to the emails it sends reading “Sent from my Palm “, someone forgot to update some small little things.

If you have ever wondered what it must feel like being the Plam Pre in a world dominated by the Apple iPhone, then the image above gives some kind of idea. As the iPhone in the UK is getting ready for allowing users to watch Premier League football on their phones, the Palm Pre is just setting off on it’s smartphone journey.
The Palm Pre advert finds itself buried in amongst, Apple iPhone this and iPhone that it seems it is hard to get your voice heard when you are the new player in any game, smartphones are no different.

Digital Trends has put the Palm Pre in the Top 10 smartphones of 2009, there is no clear labels in terms of positions but it appears after the Droid and iPhone on the list not too sure that means it is in 3rd.
It is not a real surprise that the Palm Pre is in the Top 10 as there is no doubt it is a great piece of kit, the sceptics have been saying that it hasn’t lived up to its hype but it hasn’t done to badly either. 2010 is a key year for the Pre and Palm as it will define if the much awaited app store can really make an impact on the smartphone market.

No one can argue that there is hot rivalry between the various companies developing smartphone technology after all they are businesses with the sole aim of making more money, the easiest way for them to do this is create better and cleverer devices for the masses to consume. Good news for all you gadget nerds out there. There is a downside to all this on the one hand the desire and push to become number one will produce great technology like the Palm Pre, however if you are unable to achieve growth and sales the bottom line comes into play. A great device that makes no money will be dumped out of the production line without a second thought.
The fight the Palm Pre has got on its hands is a massive one as the graph above shows, for the last few years the next generation smartphones have been giving Palm a real hammering. It is only with the release of the Pre that downward spiral seems to be at least levelling out. A few optimists may have expected more, the pessimists will say “told you it wasn’t an iPhone killer”.
However the analysis is a little premature and the Palm Pre is only setting off on its fight against its major rivals, the introduction of the Pixi will add some extra clout to the Palm fight. There is a sense of reality in the figures shown the idea the Palm Pre was going to take over the world was a misplaced one I do not personally think Palm did enough PR in the UK for the Pre and it ended up being just another smartphone upon launch.
Also Palm doesn’t quite have the wow factor of Apple or Blackberry, I have had many a discussion about this issue over the last few weeks and I firmly believe that if you took the Palm Web OS and stuck it in an Apple iPhone cover it would be a lot better appreciated. The iPhone has people buying it because it’s cool and the Blackberry because people want to be execs. Palm isn’t like that, it has always been the domain of the more tech savvy customer someone who wanted more than just email Palm was big in the days when PDA’s were cool those days are now long gone.
Being cool in the smartphone playground is a lot harder as you have to increase your customer range from the tech savvy Internet guru to the day to day task organising company secretary. This means that the simple sleek interface of the Pre has to continue and be improved on, it is great there are some geeky features like the gesture area and touchstone whilst the overall interface can rival anything in the smartphone arena.
Although the Pre may have saved a rapidly sinking ship, it has the bigger task of sailing it to truly safer waters. There is no clue as yet to say whether the Pre or anything else Palm can conjure up will be able to do this; the biggest weapon in Palm’s arsenal is likely to be webOS.
The survey was carried out by ChangeWave who surveyed 4255 consumers out of which 39% have smartphones. Survey results were found via precentral.
